CLOSING SECONDS By ... Steve Lucky Plenty of time was left on the clock So the players did not give much thought To the amount of time remaining. Both teams continued to play As if they had all the time in the world. Indifferent to the score, the clock Continued to tick away the remaining seconds. Never would those seconds return again. During the closing minutes, the trailing team Grew aware of the importance of each passing second. Plans were made to use as few of them as possible. For the leading team, on the other hand, All that stood between them and victory Was the amount of time remaining. Being careful not to make any foolish mistakes That would cost them the game, Most of their plans concerned running out the clock. During the closing seconds, time was of primary concern. Having no time to lose, the trailing team Made preparations to take the lead. Still concerned with running out the clock, The leading team did not set up the proper defense. It did not take long for the error to be discovered. Easily the trailing team scored and trailed no longer Just as time ran out. Only when time expires is the game over. Play in the closing seconds can decide the entire game. Copyright 2001, 2003, Steve Lucky
