STATES OF MATTER By ... Steve Lucky Earth, water, air, and fire were once considered the elements. Today they are seen as different states of matter. Earth is the solid. Its shape and volume remain the same Despite numerous things happening around it. Water is the liquid. It changes shape to fit any container, But does not change its volume to fill it. Air is the gas. It will expand or contract to fill most spaces And it is felt more often than seen. Fire is the plasma. It is a collection of charged particles. With its combination of positive ions and electrons, It is the state of matter least understood. All objects were once thought To be made of earth, water, air, and fire. In modern times, all known objects Contain combinations of solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas. The idea of the elements is still around. Before they were considered different types of matter, Now it is thought to be the same type of matter in different states. People still have to survive the elements. Copyright 2001, Steve Lucky
