PRETENDING By ... Steve Lucky I have pretended to be many different things Such as heroes, little girls, athletes, and kings. Each of them carries a part of me Others are not always able to see. Characters removed from their own limitations Are better able to handle the given situations. Hopefully they are not confined just to fantasy, They may give people a different view of our own reality. Most of the time my real life skills fall short Of what, as someone else, I am pretending to support. Pretend injuries also make themselves known, Whether it is done with others or done alone. Future story ideas often enter my head. By the time I act on them, I usually type something else instead. Some pretend games are played to escape Horrible realities infecting the entire landscape. Despite the most complex fantasies, reality is where I will remain. This fact has to be kept somewhere in my brain. Realities once considered too horrible to face Can be confronted temporarily because a pretend game took their place. Copyright 2003, Steve Lucky
